India is set to conduct its long-awaited national population census in 2027, nearly 17 years after the last full enumeration took place. According to official sources, the extensive exercise will begin from March 1, 2027, and will also include a caste-based census for the first time in decades.
The census will be conducted in two phases and is expected to offer detailed data on population demographics, socio-economic indicators, and caste composition. Authorities are preparing to launch the process with a pilot phase starting in select northern regions.
The preliminary phase will begin on October 1, 2026, in the union territory of Ladakh and the states of Jammu & Kashmir, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh. These areas will be surveyed earlier due to their tough terrain and seasonal constraints.
The national census, originally due in 2021 but delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will now align with demands for updated data on caste distribution, which has become a key political and policy issue in recent years.
